APALC Poll Monitoring Training & MCLE (Thursday, May 24, 2012)

APABA is working with APALC to conduct a poll monitoring program for the June 5 primary and November 6 general elections. APALC will train volunteers who will be sent to poll sites across L.A. County with high numbers of Asian American voters to make sure that voters are being treated fairly and have access to language assistance, which the county is required to provide. The volunteer monitors go inside poll sites and observe whether translated materials and bilingual poll workers are available, and if problems occur, interact with poll workers to rectify them. APABA encourages members to participate in this program. L.A. County is implementing several new language requirements, including assistance to Cambodian, Indian and Thai American voters.

Food will be provided, and MCLE credits are available. For more information, please see the event flyer or contact Eugene Lee at APALC at elee@apalc.org or 213-241-0212.

APAHM Event: A Panel Discussion on Bullying, Hazing, and Discrimination (Tuesday, May 29, 2012)

APABA is proud to present its annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Event: A Panel Discussion on Bullying, Hazing, and Discrimination. Discrimination takes many forms. Bullying, hazing, and similar behavior are frequently dismissed as playground antics or taunting. But oftentimes, this behavior is rooted in hatred and discrimination and can result in physical and mental harm. A recent study reveals that Asian students are bullied more than any other ethnic group. Our panel examines why bullying of minorities and in particular Asians is so prevalent, the undertones of racism, mental effects, and remedies.
Hon. David S. Wesley, Los Angeles Superior Court
