Started in 1985 as a joint committee of the local Asian Pacific American bar associations (and originally called the Asian Concerns Committee). Since its formation, the Committee has focused on addressing current issues impacting APAs and has demonstrated a commitment to civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity. In the past, the Committee has opposed efforts to deprive or limit the civil rights of immigrants, people of color and other minorities. For example, APABA opposed Proposition 8, which denied same-sex couples the right to marry, and also supported legal efforts to protect AB 540, a state law that allows undocumented students attending California public colleges and universities to pay in-state tuition.
